Alumni Kaleidoscope: Yik Hei Chan - BEng(ELEC)
Before the age of twenty, Yik Hei had already made headlines numerous times and had been dubbed "Son of the star" by local media. While in high school, he won the Second Award in the Engineering Category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and as a result had an asteroid named after him. A hydraulic rocket that he invented was launched during the welcoming ceremony for the Chinese astronauts of Shenzhou 6. A year later, he invented smart cups for the blind and published an autobiography, Chan Yik Hei, the young man who grabbed the star, which became a bestseller at the Hong Kong Book Fair. He is also the youngest awardee and only person from Hong Kong to have received the "Star of Promise" award at the 2006 World's Most Influential Chinese Awards organized by Phoenix Satellite Television. Most recently he was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2016 in recognition of his contributions to the community.
After graduating from HKUST, Yik Hei continued to pursue his passion in technological innovation. In 2011 he and several friends founded Bull.B Tech, a company that develops mobile applications for iOS and Android systems. Its clients include well-known local and international brands such as Spaghetti House, Sun Hung Kai Properties, FWD, PCCW, Sony, and Twinings. Despite being a young company, Bull.B Tech has already won several awards including the Hong Kong ICT Award, HKCS Outstanding ICT Achiever Award and Best Business Award in 2012.
